Locket’s Book & Craft Club 2024 - Book #4 A Summer at Sea
Locket's Book & Craft Club is continuing in 2024 so we can share our joint passions for reading and making.
Every two months or so there will be a new book recommendation and the opportunity to pre-order the special craft box that I have put together to go with the book and come to a special Knit Group/Book Club meeting either in person at Lucy Locket Land or virtually via Zoom.
Please note, you will need to have signed up for the Craft Box to come to the Book Group meetings
The Craft Boxes will vary and you will be given an indication of what type of project it will contain. You can also choose to sign up for each one or just whichever takes your fancy - there's no tie-in.
My 4th book recommendation for 2024 is A Summer at Sea by Katie Fforde
I love this book! It's an easy read, chick lit at its best, so I have saved it as our summer holiday book! A midwife takes a sabbatical to travel to Scotland to work as a cook on her friend's puffer ship as it runs tours around the highlands. There's the obvious romance will they won't they scenario, but also Fair Isle knitting, beautiful scenery, kind people and the kind of multi-generational friendships that can be formed through the love of crafting which always makes me think of my friends at Lucy Locket Land.
You can read it in any format you prefer - paperback, kindle, audio, library lend - whatever suits you and your lifestyle best.
This will be a Fair Isle knitting project (worked in the round) of my own design - but not to wear!
The exact contents of the craft box are secret but will include
- Jamieson's of Shetland pure wool Spindrift
- a printed pattern booklet
- Secret "extras”
- in a tissue-lined box
- plus entry to the in-person or virtual Book Group Meeting in August (dates to be confirmed)
The book itself is not included so you can choose your preferred format

Emily is happy with her life just as it is. She has a career as a midwife that she loves . She enjoys living on her own as a single woman. But she also feels it's time for a change and a spot of some sea air. So when her best friend, Rebecca, asks whether she'd like to spend the summer cooking on a 'puffer' boat just off the Scottish coast, she jumps at the chance. But she barely has time to get to grips with the galley before she finds herself with a lot on her plate.
Rebecca is heavily pregnant and is thrilled to have her friend onboard doing most of the work. Then there's Emily's competitive and jealous kitchen assistant, who thinks she should be head cook, not Emily. And there's Alasdair, the handsome local doctor whom Emily is desperately trying not to notice.
Because if she falls in love with him, as he appears to be falling for her, will she ever want her old life back again?
